About Us

Sew L.A. is a sewing education space and fabric store, located in the Silver Lake section of Los Angeles, CA. Our classes focus on clothing construction and fitting, and in addition to private lessons we also offer classes on sewing accessories, garment alterations, some home decor items and beginning quilting.

We mainly source from small companies and independent designers, who help support small businesses over larger chains. We are thrilled to work with those who share in our mission to expand the creative sewing community, starting people off on a life-long journey exploring their own creative, personal style. We provide organic and sustainable fabrics whenever possible, and are always looking out for the most amazing designer fabric collections. You'll find some trusted names and brands: Alexander Henry, Janome, Echino, Mettler, Gingher, Amy Butler, Kwik Sew, Heather Ross, Decades of Style...

Who Runs This Place?

My name is Shaerie, and I’m a sewing instructor who moved here to L.A. from Boston in 2004. I was also a corsetmaker for 12 years, with a small business called Lovely Creature Corsetry, but I gave all of that up at the end of 2006 when I realized that my true passion was teaching people how to sew! I have taught sewing classes at various shops around town since 2005, and at the beginning of 2007 I decided to work towards a shop of my own that focused on garment construction. Sew L.A. was born in September of 2007 with the expectaion that it would take about two years before we needed a bigger space. As I write this, we have just opened up a larger space that has a great selection of fabric and sewing machines, and starting Feb. 27th this will be the new home for the fantastic classes you have grown to love! It's located at 1637½ Silver Lake Blvd, and is open every day 11am to 6pm.

Some of our fantastic teachers include:

Alicia Bergman
Hollye Chapman
Rebecca Prange
